PREFACE
The
Department of Economics Calicut University Centre is well known to its
dedication in providing high standard higher education to the isolated
Lakshadweep population through various academic enrichment programmes, like
debate, colloquium seminar and conferences on regular basis in addition to its
usual classes. In this context in order to sensitize the Lakshadweep students
about various socio, cultural, economic and environmental issues of various islands and the possible policy
solutions available in the global arena, its applicability to Lakshadweep
economy, an inter disciplinary national seminar on the title of this book had conducted by the PG Department
of Economics..
The seminar initiated with a magnetic Lakshadweep specific cultural
programmes called Oppana, Kolkali and Bandiya etc and ends Dolipattu in
between the 34 papers presented in the seminar conducted at two different halls for three days. With an objective to
provide a comprehensive and permanent platform for the students of Lakshadweep
islands in understanding the thrust areas of immediate policy interventions,
this book is prepared. Based on scope of the validity, reliability and
adoptability of the papers with reference to Lakshadweep Island a few papers
are selected and presented in the form of this book. Since the remaining papers
are under revisions by the respective authors there is a scope for the second
volume of this book soon to be published.

University, for their immediate approval and sanction of seminar amount on

FORWARD
This book is an output of the Interdisciplinary National Seminar on
Socio Economic and Cultural Issues: Challenges and Opportunities of Lakshadweep
conducted by the Post Graduate Department of Economics of Calicut university
Centre, Kadmat, Lakshadweep on Feb 14,15 and 16th 2017. During the
seminar all most all the social, cultural and economic and environmental issues
of current importance were highlighted to the students and participants through
pre scheduled sessions via special addresses, presentations, brainstorming
sessions, round table questions and focus group discussions with experts from
across the various departments of Lakshadweep, academics from various
states of India.
The book contains eleven papers in which the first deals with the
status of human development index of Lakshadweep. In the review of literature
there are limited documents are available (up to 1999) on the status
Lakshadweep HDI. This paper is an update on the records of HDI of Lakshadweep
islands. By considering the importance of sensitizing the students on the
various environmental issues of Lakshadweep the second papers included which
portrays and review the ongoing climate change action plan of Lakshadweep and
its implementation issues.
The third paper is about banking
ombudsman in which the author explores the entitlement
of Lakshadweep community to good governance. The paper titled Growth,
Instability and Trend in the Production and Productivity of Coconut: a
Comparative Study of Kerala and Lakshadweep compare the productivity trend of
Lakshadweep coconut production and trace the causes, solution of declining
trend of coconut productivity. The remaining papers are dealt with education,
participatory finance, culture, tourism development, unit cost analysis of high
tech medical services and its adoptability to Lakshadweep, scope challenges and
economic opportunities of Lakshadweep, cultural values of Lakshadweep etc.
I congratulate the editors for their sincere effort to bring the seminar
output in this book form. I hope the book will provide the reader a clear
vision of not only what is Lakshadweep today and also what should be
Lakshadweep in near future.
